Where is St. Jude’s Church Kurulukale located?

Who is Saint Jude?

St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, believed to be a relative of Jesus Christ and one of his 12 Disciples, is the ‘Saint of the Despaired’, ‘Hope of the Hopeless’ as well as the ‘Patron Saint of the Impossible’. Saint Jude was one of Christ’s most intimate collaborators, being part of a group of twelve men called Apostles, a Greek term meaning “one who is sent.” The Apostles’ mission to carry the Christian message to the world was unique in the authority they held.

“He appointed twelve whom he also named apostles that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons” (Mark 3:14-15).

Images of St. Jude often include a flame around his head, which represents his presence at Pentecost, when he accepted the Holy Spirit alongside the other apostles. Another attribute is St. Jude holding an image of Christ, in the Image of Edessa. Sometimes he can also be seen holding a carpenter’s ruler or is depicted with a scroll or book, the Epistle of Jude. Biblical scholars agree St. Jude was a son of Clopas and his mother Mary was the Virgin Mary’s cousin. Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia.

St. Jude Thaddaeus

At a time when the church dedicated to Saint Jude in Seeduwa Kurulukale was very dilapidated, a stunning church was designed and constructed by Supuwath Arana in a short period of one year time according to the concept of Rev. Fr. Darrel Coonghe.

A New Beacon of Faith… St. Jude’s Church Kurulukale, Seeduwa consecrated by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith on the 12th of January 2025 and opened the doors for faithful devotees with a live mass.
